While participating in fundrasing events and making donations are always appreciated, the United Caring Shelters relies heavily on the dedicated involvement of volunteers to succeed in its mission. Beyond serving as unpaid staff, volunteers act as liaisons between the shelter community and the public at large. With only a handful of paid program staff members, volunteers play a crucial role in delivering services to the numerous residents. Their presence not only helps to expand the services that can be offered, but also brings fresh energy and enthusiasm to the staff and clients.
Primarily volunteers cook and serve meals at the shelter. Volunteers also assit with building maintenance and help with office work: typing, filing, copying, stuffing envelopes, updating our mailing list, and helping our office administrator with various tasks.
We also need volunteer help in the Day Shelter for things like organizing the pantry, working at the front desk or listening to our guests about their day. A lot of guests crave a little one-on-one conversation with somebody from outside the shelter.
There are current openings for kitchen help in August.
